Gardening Desperation

Hi, my name is Sarah and I am a terrible gardener.

It's true, no matter how hard I try I just kill everything. The only exception is my pretty little marigolds that I planted a few months ago....they are still going strong!! :)

But these pretty little pink and purple flowers....dead. I watered like I was supposed to...but first the pink ones died (the ones in front) then slowly the purple ones started dying....now it is just a big green shrub/weed looking thing. :(

So, here is where I need your help. I want to plant some new flowers in this little area but I need your suggestions. I need easy, low maitenance, and pretty! :) What are some good summer flowers?

I also need to purchase a new bush, shrub, filler something. See the pic below....see that empty spot on the right?
There are shrubs and flowers on the other side as well so we just have this hole there. We ripped out a dead bush last year and filled it with a couple Mandevilla plants that looked like this
and they were pretty for a little while.....the problem is they didn't get enough sun. This part of our house only gets about 4 good hours of sun per day and these babies need a lot more than that. Things I am learning....

So, here is where you come in again....

What is a good filler bush, low maintenance, low sunlight, and grows fast?? :)

Here are a few of my faves, but I need your thoughts and suggestions...

Knockout Rose Bush

Azalea

Rhododendron

And my favorite, Hydrangea

Now I know that the Rose Bush needs 4-6 hours sunlight so that might work...and the hydrangea needs minimal sunlight...not sure about the others....
And when can I plant them??? Are there any I can plant now?

What are your thoughts, ideas, no-nos, suggestions?

Sincerely,

The Gardening Impaired
